[December 2016] In an experimental heritage workshop at Mellby Inn on Öland, I started humming two notes after playing these same two notes on the piano (G and A below middle C). They came to represent to me a series of alternate states which I thought upon as life and death, water and earth, parent and child. The space in-between these alternate states feels like the hovering and oscillation which has described the poetry of sketching. The effect of the two notes becomes like a rocking. Sometimes the notes bend into each other and I documented these movements as small vertical lines. Words as song lyrics emerged which I began singing in a melody where the two rocking notes provide a harmonic frame (A minor to G major). The night before I had been sleeping by the sea and it was the first time I had been away from my daughter who usually sleeps beside me. In a way I felt a chain between me and the sea, like I was the sea to my daughter and at the same time, the sea is my own mother. ‘Vilan som modern’ means in English, ‘resting like mother.’ In this space I was still and silent and yet, there feels to be movement in this space.
