[Autumn 2016] I went to visit a sound sculpture known as The Singing Ringing Tree by Mike Tonkin and Anna Liu of Tonkin Liu. It is placed on the moors in the north of England and is made of lots of metal tubes. The wind makes the tubes resonate depending upon the intensity and direction of it. I took my flute to the sculpture and played with the wind. This moorland is a powerful and dominant part of the landscape in these areas between Yorkshire and Lancashire where I lived as a child and youth. I recorded duets with the tree to an audience of sheep in the mist. The sculpture is placed in an area where visitors have exceptional views from a height but on my visit it was cloaked in mist and I was alone apart from the sheep. It made me think of how things are veiled from our experiences. Do we ever really see what there is to see or hear what there is to hear etc.?
